Hi there Queens!
Have you ever come across those midsized, small and smooth egg shaped shells, often colorful patterned as you soaked your feet at the shores of the beach?
Maybe you didn’t think much of it before, but I want to share some more history about your royalty as Queens! Let me give you a brief history.
Cowrie shells are the single most identifiable symbol of African culture today.
The cowrie is a small marine snail that lives in tropical waters off the Pacific and Indian oceans. The word cowrie is used to refer to shells of animals that grow around themselves.
In Ancient Africa, Cowrie shells were the first currency used by mankind. They were a representation of wealth and were traded for food, goods and services and they represented the power of destiny and prosperity.
Thousands of years ago the Chinese used Cowries as a form of currency so often that it’s now the shape of their pictograph for money.
In some cultures like traditional Japan, woman in labor hold cowrie shells in their hands to aid with the progression of childbirth. And in Pompeii, women wear cowrie shell necklaces as a symbol of fertility.
Cowrie beads are considered powerful and although many people have tried to reproduce them by using fake materials that make them look glossy and cheap, if you can get your hands on real cowrie beads, then you are holding a large piece of African culture!
Because of their unique and scarce nature, cowries have often been referred to as the African Gold!
